Ceramic coatings to enhance marine performance

Zircotec’s proprietary plasma-applied ceramic thermal barrier coating is traditionally used within the automotive and motorsport industry. However, it can also be utilised across the marine industry.

Andrews Boathouses Limited came to us as part of their restoration process of the ‘Copper Slipper’, a 1954 Andrews 30ft Greyhound Slipper Stern Launch, boat number 380. Copper Slipper was originally named ‘Vickhaye’ when she was first built in 1954. In 1970 she was sold to Danny La Rue and renamed ‘Our Miss Fred’. She fell into a state of disrepair and, after being purchased by Frank Brough, the late TV presenter, she underwent a major restoration in 1981/82 after which she was renamed ‘Symbol’. She kept this name through several further owners and has won seven Thames Traditional Boat Festival trophies. Andrews Boathouses purchased her in 2021 and, after carrying out a comprehensive bottom-up restoration to bring her to concourse standard, renamed her ‘Copper Slipper’.

Copper Slipper has been totally restored, refurbished and customised by Andrews Boathouses to become a stunning, unique launch.

Her deck, hull and sides have been replaced with sustainably sourced maple and mahogany. The deck has been finished with twenty coats of Awlwood varnish and machine polished to a mirror deep lustre finish to create the outstanding look and quality we strive for in all our boats. The hull sides have been painted Oxford blue with a slight copper metallic finish. All the old chrome fittings, including the navigation lights, exhaust pipe and rub rail have been replaced with triple copper-plated fittings made to the same pattern as the originals. New custom-made cream dials with copper numerals and bezels have also been fitted. The running gear and steering have been removed, rebuilt, re-packed and then fitted with hydraulic steering and a new Bluemels ‘Brooklands’ steering wheel. The boat has been completely rewired with top quality marine wire and fuse boxes. New horseshoe stern seating, helm and rear-facing bench seats have been installed, all upholstered in Cashmere marine leather with copper piping to match her fittings. She now seats eight people comfortably and also benefits from a motorised all weather hood which gives protection from inclement weather at the touch of a switch.

Performance Copper

She is powered by a rebuilt and marinised Daimler 2.5 litre V8 petrol engine, detailed to a high show standard with electric ignition hidden in the original casings and a new dynamator fitted inside a classic car dynamo case. The gearbox has been rebuilt with all new bearings and seals. As part of the restoration, they needed to ceramic coat the exhaust manifolds of the unique marinised Daimler 2.5 litre V8 petrol engine to ensure good heat insulation within the engine bay and to enhance the stunning look of the engine with a copper finish, Performance Copper™ (from our Performance Colours™ Range) to match the rest of the fittings on the boat.
